pThe ‘bluestones’ which form the lintels of Stonehenge were sourced in the Preseli Hills of Pembrokeshire around 2500 BC. Bronze Age and Iron Age peoples made extensive use of local materials in erecting a variety of cairns, standing stones and defensive works as manifest in Wales’ many hill forts. Triassic sandstones form much of the coast between Barry and Penarth and extend eastwards along the Monmouthshire coast to the English border at Chepstow. They also occur more sporadically further west between Ogmore-by-Sea and Kenfig./p

pThe Vicksburg Campaign was directed by Major General Ulysses S. Grant against Vicksburg, Mississippi, a fortress city controlled by the Confederate forces. Vicksburg, Mississippi was the last Confederate controlled section of the Mississippi River. The Union army under Major General Grant gained navigational control of the Mississippi River by eventually capturing Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. On Nov. 6, 1861 Union General U.S. Grant moved the Union based troops from Cairo Illinois using steam powered gunboats and transport boats to Columbus, Kentucky. Since confederate General Polk’s Fort DeRussy defenses at Columbus were very strong, General Grant decided to attack Camp Johnson, a Confederate outpost across the Mississippi River at Belmont, Missouri./p
pAt each crossing, they created a steep rapids or waterfall and emptied the valleys of their sediments. As a result, these streams have a much different character than those of the Ozarks, making them very challenging for white-water canoes and kayaks. The most notable waterfalls are typically at the final ridge crossing before the streams leave the Athens Plateau and enter the Coastal Plain. Because of the waterfalls, this boundary has sometimes been referred to as the “Fall Line.” It has proven to be a prime location for dams that impound reservoirs built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and today every major stream has been dammed to create lakes, such as Lake Greeson in Pike County and De Gray Lake in Clark County. The Central Ouachita Mountains region, sometimes called the Novaculite Uplift, is the most diverse subdivision of the Ouachitas./p

pMany other waterways and streams have their headwaters in the Boston Mountains portion of the Ozarks such as the Mulberry River, the White River, War Eagle Creek, Little Mulberry Creek, Lee Creek, Big Piney Creek, and the Little Red River. Ozarks is a toponym believed to be derived as an English-language adaptation of the French abbreviation aux Arcs (short for aux Arcansas, meaning of/at/to the Arcansas ). Originally, in the decades prior to the French and Indian War, aux Arkansas referred to the trading post at Arkansas Post, located in wooded Arkansas Delta lowland area above the confluence of the Arkansas River with the Mississippi River. There are no rocks of Cretaceous age in Wales but they are known to be present within the sub-sea basins off the Welsh coast e.g. South Wales has a written record of geological interest going back to the 12th century when Giraldus Cambrensis noted pyritous shales near Newport. George Owen in 1603 correctly identified the stratigraphic relationship between the Carboniferous Limestone and the Coal Measures./p
pCombined with steep slopes, that makes most of the region unsuitable for farming. Cropland is restricted to the valley floors of Shoal Creek and Spring River. Many of the hillsides are covered with hardwood forests, predominantly oaks and hickories. The large amounts of limestone in the region has also led to the creation of large caves. Since the minerals in limestone more readily dissolve in water than the minerals in the other rock layers found in the region, caves form wherever underground water systems erode away at the rock./p
pThe system between Old River control complex and Memphis is supplemented by four backwater areas located at the mouths of the St. Francis, Yazoo, White and Red rivers . pFrom the Red River backwater to the Gulf of Mexico, including Atchafalaya basin, the Mississippi and tributary project is designed to divert and control of the Mississippi River floodwaters . The current levee system integrity can be bolstered by advancements in the design, installation, construction, and maintenance of seepage control measures, to include landside drainage trenches, drainage banks, berms, and relief wells . More than 1600 km of concrete mattress revetment assures reliability of the navigational channel and protects the levee system from erosion. Local partners implemented strict annual levee maintenance program with their own funds and labor./p
pThere are very localized occurrences of Triassic material in Gower and south Pembrokeshire, much of it breccia-fill of fissures in underlying Carboniferous Limestone. Triassic sandstones are also found along the border with Cheshire and Shropshire, though most often concealed beneath recent fluvial and glacially derived material. In the mid-19th century, two prominent geologists, Roderick Murchison and Adam Sedgwick used their studies of the geology of Wales to establish certain principles of stratigraphy and palaeontology./p
